From Stroke Recovery to Yoga Teacher Training

Meet Karen! She is currently finishing up her yoga teacher training program with Awakened Yoga (Spring of 2020). You've probably also seen her working up at our front desk. She practices around 5-6 times a week and is also a bookkeeper, a mom of 3 grown children and a Sugar Land resident for the past 25 years. She began her practice about 2.5 years ago and after suffering a stroke in 2014 at the young age of 46. In the picture above, here is Karen today - hiking, healthy, strong - because of yoga.

Prior to the stroke, Karen, besides being a busy mom and working as a bookkeeper, was active in sports and an avid runner. The stroke left her with weakness and instability - she often used a cane to walk. She needed an activity that would help build strength and stability - she also needed something she could do long term.

She started at Awakened Yoga and was happy to discover that her hip pain from running decreased and was happy to become part of their community. The best part? "Because I had a stroke 6 years ago, I REALLY love yoga as it has helped me regain functional strength to walk well, go hiking and do other activities that I was not able to do since my stroke." She loves the complete workout for your body AND mind and combines strength training with elements of breathing and meditation to relieve stress but her favorite part? THE FUN AND COMMUNITY at our studio.

Teacher training was a natural next step for Karen who wanted to learn more about yoga's history and different types of yoga. She knew she wanted to take yoga to other populations like seniors since it has help her regain mobility and strength. She knew that doing the program would teach her more about yoga, give her confidence to be in front of students and share her love of yoga.

She offers her thoughts on whether you should take on a yoga teacher training program: "I say do it! If you love yoga, you'll gain a lot of knowledge that will expand your personal practice and prepare you to teach others. Do it even if you don't know if you want to teach yoga - you will meet amazing people, gain confidence and really enjoy the process."

Our next yoga teacher training starts October 23, 2020. Go to www.awakenedyogastudio.com/teacher-training for more information.
